Director of Christian Education

Overview: Individual is responsible for the Christian education of pre-K through high school at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Includes oversight, planning and implementation of Sunday morning educational programs for children and youth; implementation of programming includes use of journey to Adulthood and oversight of annual Pilgrimage.

Throughout all activities the individual will incorporate the beliefs of the Christian faith in a way that provides fun, inspirational experiences which help children and youth develop their relationship with God and enhance their spiritual growth. Programs will also help them develop healthy, positive relationships with each other.

Position is part-time, averaging 10-18 hours/week – varies by season. Sunday morning education and Youth Group follows Evansville/Vanderburgh County and Warrick County school calendars. Summers include J2A Pilgrimage, Vacation Bible School (when enrollment supports it) and planning for upcoming program year. The program year begins in mid September and extends through mid May.

Primary Responsibilities:

Identification of appropriate curriculum for pre-K up to Rite 13 in the J2A Program, (in consultation with the Christian Education Committee and the Rector) as well as ordering curriculum and supplies.

Development of and partnership with Sunday morning teachers and substitute teachers.

Recruitment of necessary volunteers for Sunday evening youth group, as needed

Leadership of annual youth mission trip in consultation with the Christian Education Committee and Rector, with approval from the Vestry.

Promotion of Sunday morning programming – i.e. articles in church newsletter, updates to website, emails to parents as appropriate and individual correspondence.

Support of the other Christian Educational programs during the week or that are seasonal in nature.

Ensure that anyone who participates as a leader or volunteer has completed training in Safeguarding God’s Children policies and procedures.

Secondary Responsibilities: 

Assist the Rector with planning and implementation of adult educational programming for Sunday morning.

Supervise the nursery staff (paid and volunteer) when they are present for programmed events. Arrange for staffing and substitutes as needed.

Assist with Vacation Bible School, if needed.

Job Expectations:

Safeguard the wellbeing of God’s children and serve as a spiritual guide in their upbringing.

Meet regularly with the Rector.

Attend weekly Monday morning staff meetings, if not in conflict with other employment.

Attend Sunday morning Sunday School, worship service, and coffee hour from 9:00-12:00 to help facilitate Sunday morning Christian education, and to build positive relationships with our youth and their families.

Attend Christian Education Committee meetings and provide productive contributions.

Collaborate with parish leadership to promote growth of the parish.

Attend occasional Diocesan events and/or retreats (may include an occasional weekend event).

Qualifications:

BA in religion, theology, education or relevant work experience.

Prior work experience as Christian youth director/teacher and/or experience in children’s education.

Strong verbal communication and relationship building skills; able to lead children, youth and adult volunteers.

Mature in faith and behavior and practices appropriate boundaries with youth.

Word processing, database, presentations software and social media.
